Preparing for the Flu Season

This year the CDC (Center for Disease Control) recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get vaccinated.  Included are seniors age 65 and older and those who have certain medical conditions including asthma, diabetes, and chronic lung disease.

Vaccines are currently available and many residents at Granny’s Place in Mission Viejo and their caregivers are making plans to get vaccinated.  Flu vaccines are available in doctor’s offices, clinics, local pharmacies, and local senior centers.

Those who received a flu vaccination will still want to get vaccinated this year. A flu vaccine is needed every year because flu viruses are constantly changing. The flu vaccine is newly formulated each year to keep up with the flu viruses as they change.  In addition, multiple studies conducted over different seasons and across vaccine types and influenza virus subtypes have shown that the body’s immunity to influenza viruses (acquired either through natural infection or vaccination) declines over time.

Tough Decisions Re: Care for the Elderly

Many of us will eventually face the difficult decision of when and where to relocate our parents once it becomes clear that independent living is no longer possible. Residential Care Facilities, also referred to as “Assisted Living Facilities” or “Board and Care Homes” are state licensed, non-medical facilities that provide a high level of care and include assistance with activities of daily living.

According to the Council of Aging in Orange County, there are more than 331,000 people over the age of 65 living in Orange County. Almost 37% live alone and may need assistance at some point in their lives. Continue reading

Ten Ways To Enjoy Summer

Dana Point Harbor

Granny's Place - Words of WisdomFor a lot of us, warm sunny weather is only here 3-4
months out of the year. Because of this, we should
put in the extra effort to enjoy it to the fullest while
it’s here. Here are 10 ways to do so.

  1. Brew a pot of sun tea. Put desired amount of tea
bags in a sun tea jar or other glass jar, fill with water
and set in the sun. Add fresh herbs at this point if you
wish. Let sit in the sun until tea has reached color
you desire. Sweeten to taste, chill and serve over ice.
  2. Cook on the grill whenever possible. Not only is
this a pleasant way to cook but you don’t heat up your
kitchen and the food is delicious. Continue reading

Affection and Care for Those Who Need Help

Granny's Place - Affection and Care“A test of a people is how it behaves towards the old. It is easy to love  children. Even tyrants and dictators make a point of being fond of children. But the affection and care for the old, the incurable, the helpless are the true gold mines of a culture.”  Abraham J. Heschel
